The Last Jam Sandwich War
My mate Ian said it was: “An ‘istoric moment in our lives,” because At age eleven there are few events – Like washing necks and pitching tents That could act as such a metaphor As the day we had “the Last Jam Sandwich War”.

This piece - penned under my nom de plume, Alexander Maycock - recently picked up an honourable mention in the 2008 Mom Tri's Boathouse Short Fiction Competition, judged by crime writer, Jake Needham.
The original story was almost 3,000 words long, but the competition called for a maximum of 1,500 words. While I found the editing process somewhat rewarding, as it tightened the story considerably, a great deal of the character development also had to bite the dust.
I may, eventually, post the full story here... if I can be bothered.

It was an hour before dawn as Marcus dragged the ungainly canvas hold-all across the car park at the back of his office. He had taken too long, he knew. But Marcus was hardly an expert in these matters and the fat bastard in the bag had been a lot more difficult to carve up than he’d expected. He gave the bag a sharp kick.
“Forty-three million dollars, Digby! Forty-three million, you stupid fat bastard!”...

| You know how some addicts say that society is to blame, well that's the case with me. It wasn't peer pressure that got me into Charlotte's Web and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - my friend's were smart, when I offered to lend them my collected Roald Dahl short stories they looked at me funny, shouted "Just say no!", and went off after healthier pursuit's, like football and glue sniffing.
