Phichit was where Krai Tong fought the man-crocodile, Chala Wan to win the hands of both daughters of the local Governor. This little fable - more of which later - came to me from a former Phichitian, now based in Bangkok, and I decided that I would take the opportunity of a free weekend to motor up there and see for myself.

K Preeda's house sits on a quiet soi, off a quiet soi, off a quiet soi, off of the noisy Rachadaphisek Road in the north of Bangkok. To find it one requires a map, a compass and a bit of luck. It is strange to find this monument to Thailand's earlier generations tucked away amidst concrete escarpments of little architectural merit. Yet this oddness also adds reason to what many would consider folly. The art of traditional building is dying out, these truly remarkable feats of structural engineering - that were once a common sight in the city - have now become rarer than a quick drive across town.
